Double-Basses William Fletcher William Fletcher (Darlington) 1890 5/8 size. An unusual example of an English double bass made in Darlington in 1890 (labelled) by Wm Fletcher. I believe William Fletcher to have been a skilled wood worker/craftsman but I don't believe he was a fulltime/professional maker as his approach to making a double bass seems to be influenced by many European styles. It has a one-piece Poplar carved back (it's actually 3 pieces, one main section and to small pieces added either side to create the extra width needed for the bottom bout). Tightly flamed maple ribs and a nice quality carved spruce front. I have had this bass for about 10 years and have been trying to find out more about this maker with no luck however, I have finally got around to finishing the restoration and I'm very pleased with the out come and it looks and sounds remarkable. Specs; back length 106cm, string length 100cm, d-neck, rib depth 19cm (not including the front and back. Please feel free to ask for more details. £10,000 07931 165350
