German A swell back German bass from 1970's, initially set up by Turner Violins Ltd with recent work all done by Godfrey Shepard in Brighton. The bass is an ideal set up for pizzicato jazz with Thomastiks and a lowish action. Trying to describe the nature of sound is difficult but it's big, often used on acoustic gigs and has quite a jazz pedigree having graced the stage with Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache and Ken Peplowski amongst others - it's that kind of bass! Only selling due to retirement. Solid body, ebony fingerboard, lovely head, neck very comfortable and playable and light to carry. The attached Realist pick up is also thrown in.

Hawkes Concert I have decided to part with my double bass, a Hawkes Concert model made around 1918 probably in Germany. This has a full swell back, broad shoulders with the classic violin shape based on the unsurpassable form of Vincenzo Panormo's instruments. The bass, being over 100 years old, has survived well, having been repaired/restored recently by reputable luthiers and produces a full, rich and powerful tone ideally suited to both orchestral and jazz performance. These instruments change hands at between £15,000 and £25,000 and I am willing to look at offers of over £16,500 to achieve a quick sale. It comes with a soft case and an Underwood-style pickup. If interested please telephone me any time day or night.

Reghin 1/4 Reghin Double Bass made in Romania about 10 years ago. Beautiful instrument in immaculate condition which has been upgraded with D'Adarrio Helicore Orchestral strings to produce an outstanding sound. The top is made of solid spruce and the back of solid maple. Neck and sides are all maple. The instrument has been developed by a local luthier Jonathan Beecher in Oxford to enhance the sound and to optimise playing for small hands - bridge and strings have been adjusted to make facilitate use with small hands. These adjustments really do speed up the learning process. Bass bag included in excellent condition. This is collection only from Oxford. However for a small contribution I am happy to deliver within the M40 Oxford to London corridor or can arrange pick up from South Kensington if payment arranged in advance. It is available to try out in Oxford.

Romanian Romanian circa 2010. This is a 3/4 size violin outline instrument with a swell back. While the instrument is on the large size, the string length is only 103.6cm making it exceptionally easy to play. This bass produces a huge sound and would be ideal for either jazz or classical players (previously used by a professional jazz player for years on numerous gigs and recordings). Some signs of cosmetic wear and tear but otherwise in excellent condition. Open to offers.

Unknown - Rubner style 5/8 Lovely 5/8 size Bohemian double bass, c.1930, made in the same style as Joseph Rubner basses, from an unknown workshop in the same region. It has a particularly slender neck so it's great for smaller hands, but it has loads of tone and remarkable low end for its size. It is set up with some fairly light steel strings, an adjustable bridge, and is fitted with a Bassbalsereit pickup. It has been damaged and repaired (well) a few times in its life but is otherwise in great condition for its age. It's been gigged lots in the four years I've owned it, and though valued at £6000 I would settle for £5600. Could be perfect for a student who wants to move on to a more professional instrument but would benefit from something smaller than a 3/4. I can send more photos on request, and viewings are most welcome.

Will A Mackay Will A Mackay re-worked 3/4 Romanian Double Bass.I bought this bass in 2011 from the original owner who purchased it in 1995 new. I wanted a useable bass set up to the specification of my professional level instruments. Some of the work done includes - Replacement Rubner tuners, Glasser carbon fibre end pin unit, despaiu adjustable bridge, bass bar replaced, re-varnished using quality Behler varnish, neck reshaped from the typically clunky eastern European shape to something much more comfortable to play and the fingerboard has had a compound radius planed into with a fairly shallow scoop along it's length so perhaps best suited to Jazz or soloist work. Plays really nicely and sounds great, quite a punch to it. Gauranteed more playable than any other European bass in this price range. For further information on my luthiery work and background please check my website at: www.wmacbullfiddlescottishluthiery.com

William Adam Mackay 3/4 Double bass, large viol outline based on William Tarr bass of 1834. Meticulously hand crafted in the old tradition relying on hand skills learned and honed over a 20 year period with not a power tool or dremel in sight, by a musician. Authentically hand made in a way very few luthier can claim. The volume of this bass is helped by it's large viol outline yet the neck is comfortable and a pleasure to play. String length - 1020mm, 40 1/8". Upper bout width 530mm, lower 700mm. Length of back 1120mm. Neck stop 430, body stop 560mm. Two bass on this model available. One set up for classical, one for Jazz. Viewing recommended and visitors always welcome.

William Fletcher William Fletcher (Darlington) 1890 5/8 size. An unusual example of an English double bass made in Darlington in 1890 (labelled) by Wm Fletcher. I believe William Fletcher to have been a skilled wood worker/craftsman but I don't believe he has any connection with of any of the professional northern English double bass workshops and his approach to making a double bass seems to be influenced by many European styles. It has a one-piece Poplar carved back (it's actually 3 pieces, one main section and to small pieces added either side to create the extra width needed for the bottom bout). Tightly flamed maple ribs and a nice quality carved spruce front. I have had this bass for about 10 years and have been trying to find out more about this maker with no luck however, I have finally got around to finishing the restoration and I'm very pleased with the out come and it looks and sounds remarkable.Specs; back length 106cm, string length 100cm, d-neck, rib depth 19cm (not including the front and back. Please feel free to ask for more details. Thank you
